A.F.A. fixative (ALCOHOL, FORMALDEHYDE, ACETIC ACID) is used in histology for the rapid fixation of tissues, the preservation of glycogen and central nervous system tissues, and cytoplasmic fixation when RNA digestion needs to be performed. This fixative prevents the dissolution of carbohydrates before the protein component is fully fixed.
The acetic acid in this fixative ensures the fixation of nucleoprotein, providing an improved histological image.
