EXPOSURE TO FORMALDEHYDE VAPORS: REAL DANGER OR EXAGGERATION?

You may have heard that regulations in Europe require manufacturers to offer containers that eliminate exposure to these vapors. In fact, exposure to formaldehyde fumes without the protection of a chemical hood is strictly forbidden there.

Here, although regulations are less stringent, the toxicity and carcinogenicity of formaldehyde have been demonstrated.  You must never be exposed to vapors exceeding a certain threshold (1.5 PPM). However, there is no formal obligation to protect against all exposure to vapors, as is the case in Europe. Which doesn't mean it's a bad idea...

Formaldehyde solutions remain a toxic product which, even at low doses, is irritating, causing inflammation of the eyes and respiratory tract, coughing and possibly more serious lung problems. Chronic effects are also observed with long-term exposure, even at low doses. Over time, worker sensitization can also occur. Finally, contact of the liquid with the skin causes skin irritation.

All these inconveniences have been widely observed, and have led us at Chaptec to offer, here in America, containers that eliminate exposure to formalin itself and especially to its vapors for workers. Indeed, most of the people who place tissues to be analyzed in formalin-filled jars are not working under the shelter of a chemical hood. Often, they are nurses in clinics or operating theatres. Exposure to fumes is inevitable, and so are the inconveniences.  And go and check whether it exceeds the ceiling value!

The containers we offer traps the formalin in the lid, behind a resistant membrane. Once the sample is inserted into the container, the safety ring is removed, allowing the perforator to pierce the membrane once the container is closed. The tissue is exposed to the formalin and begins to fix, but the lid's O-ring seal prevents liquid and vapors from escaping. What's more, it also eliminates any risk of spillage!

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that formaldehyde levels in the air do not exceed established standards. Here's a simple, innovative solution to help you comply.

Consequently, even if it's not compulsory, it's still an excellent idea to eliminate exposure to harmful fumes from toxic and irritating products like formaldehyde, especially when solutions exist and are available locally.
