This stain serves to show acid mucopolysaccharides of epithelial origin (mucins) in histologic sections, Mucicarmine is comparatively specific; in fact, mucins derived from fibroblasts stain poorly.
This is an empirical method and its histochemical principle is unknown. Some suggest that the glucidic part of mucines reacts.
